The Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star' (commonly called Earth Star) is a stunning terrestrial bromeliad known for its low-growing, star-shaped rosette of wavy foliage. Featuring intense bright pink to reddish-crimson leaves striped with dark green, this compact plant thrives in bright indirect light and high humidity. A low-maintenance favorite, it is ideal for indoor containers, terrariums, or warm tropical shade gardens.

Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star' propagates naturally through offshoots commonly known as "pups". Because it is a terrestrial bromeliad, these offsets readily root when placed in soil once they reach about one-third the size of the parent plant.
Identify the Offsets (Pups): Wait until the mother plant produces offshoots around its base after flowering. Allow the pups to grow to roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the original plant.
Separate: Gently twist the pup off at the stem base, or snip it cleanly using a sterile blade.
Callous: Let the cut end sit in a shaded area for 24 hours to air-dry and seal off, preventing rot.
Potting: Plant the base of the pup securely into a well-draining potting mix (e.g., equal parts peat, perlite, and coarse sand or potting soil).
Establishment: Keep the medium lightly moist and place the container in bright, indirect sunlight. Roots will establish in a few weeks.
